PDF to DWG — professional drawings redrawn in AutoCAD, revised as you need them

What this service is, and what it is not

You have drawings that exist only as PDFs — exported from a package nobody has the source file for, scanned from paper, or received from a consultant who will not release the DWG. You need them back as proper AutoCAD drawings your team can work on. That is this service.

What we do is not file conversion. An online converter takes seconds and gives you geometry: every line on one layer or on dozens of colour-derived layers, text broken into individual letters or into unsearchable polylines, walls made of hundreds of disconnected segments, hatch exploded into thousands of separate lines, nothing snapping to anything. Nobody drafts on top of that — cleaning it up costs more than starting again. We draw the sheet from scratch, as a drawing, by hand, the way it would have been drawn had the DWG never been lost.

The second difference matters more. A converter can only reproduce what is on the page. We are a design office, so the drawing does not have to come back identical: tell us what should be different and it is drawn that way from the start.

Changes made in the same pass

Most clients do not send a PDF because they want that exact drawing again. They send it because the building is about to change and the old sheet is the only record of what is there. So the redraw and the revision happen together, in one job rather than two:

• Openings moved, added or closed up, partitions revised, rooms merged or split
• Dimension chains rebuilt and restated, room numbering and areas recalculated
• Existing and proposed shown separately, with demolition and new work distinguished as your practice does it
• Missing sheets reconstructed — a section or an elevation that the archive lost, drawn from the plans that survived
• Composite sheets split into separate drawings, or several sheets combined into one
• Your title block, layer standard, text styles and drawing numbering applied throughout

Where a requested change conflicts with something in the source — a wall you want moved that a section shows as loadbearing, a dimension that no longer adds up once an opening shifts — we raise it before drawing, not afterwards.

What we start from

Vector PDFs, raster scans of paper prints, photographs of drawings, or a mixed archive of all three at different scales and from different decades. Multi-page sets are fine. You do not need to sort the material before sending it — working out which sheet supersedes which is part of the job.

How the drawing is rebuilt

Every element is drawn as the object it actually is. Walls as parallel lines that close and trim, doors and windows as blocks, grids as grid lines, dimensions as dimension objects tied to the geometry rather than as text typed over a line. Layers, line weights, text styles and the title block follow your CAD standard — send your template and we work inside it. If you do not have one, the file comes back on a clean, conventional layer structure and you can tell us to change it.

Scale is set from the dimensions written on the drawing, not from the printed geometry. Where the two disagree — and on scans of old prints they disagree often, because paper shrinks and copies of copies drift — the written dimension wins and the discrepancy goes into the note that comes with the file. Where the source contradicts itself, two sheets showing the same room at different sizes, we flag it in writing rather than picking one silently.

What you get

A DWG file per drawing, in the AutoCAD version you ask for, with model space at 1:1 in millimetres or in your preferred units and layouts set up to plot at the original scale. DXF if you need it, and a PDF check set plotted from the DWG so you can lay it over the original. Plus a short note listing anything the source could not answer.

Accuracy and what it depends on

A redrawn file is only as accurate as what it was redrawn from. From a vector PDF with a full dimension chain, the result is dimensionally identical to the original. From a clean scan with dimensions, geometry is built to the written dimensions and interpolated only where the drawing gives nothing to work from. From a photograph of a faded print with no dimensions at all, you get a proportionally correct drawing and an honest statement that it is not survey-grade. If what the project really needs is a measured survey of the building, we will say so rather than sell a file that looks precise and is not.

How is this different from an online PDF to DWG converter?

A converter gives you geometry, not a drawing: lines land on layers derived from colour, text becomes polylines or single characters, walls arrive as hundreds of disconnected segments and nothing snaps. We redraw the sheet by hand as a working drawing — and, unlike any converter, we can change it while we do. The file that comes back is the drawing you want, not a traced copy of the one you had.

Can you change the drawing while redrawing it?

Yes, and it is usually the reason the work is commissioned. Openings moved or closed, partitions revised, dimensions and room numbering restated, existing and proposed separated, a lost section reconstructed from the plans that survived. Describe the result you need — a marked-up print, a sketch or a written list is enough — and the drawing is built to it.

Can you work from a scan or a photograph rather than a vector PDF?

Yes. Scans, photographs of prints and mixed archives are normal input. Scale is set from the dimensions written on the drawing, and where the drawing gives no dimension to work from, that is stated in the note supplied with the file.

Will the file follow our CAD standard?

Send your template and we draw inside it — your layers, line weights, text styles, blocks and title block. Without a template the file comes back on a clean conventional layer structure that we will rename to yours on request.

What if the source drawings contradict each other?

We write it down. Where two sheets show the same element differently, or a written dimension disagrees with the printed geometry, the conflict goes into the note rather than being resolved silently in the drawing.
